An 18-year-old is undergoing surgery at Auckland Hospital after being impaled on a steel rod at a primary school.

The man, who works for a construction company, fell on the rod about midday and was taken to the hospital in a serious condition.

He was working in a fenced-off area of Meadowbank Primary School in Remuera, where a new classroom is being built.

A school spokesperson says no children saw the incident.

The Department of Labour has been notified, and will announce on Tuesday whether it will investigate.
