Agency to take drivers to court over tolls

7:19 pm on 14 March 2012

The Transport Agency intends to prosecute five drivers who it says have collected more than $9000 in unpaid toll and administration charges on an Auckland toll road.

The charges were issued on the Northern Gateway Toll Road on State Highway 1, which bypasses Orewa and Waiwera.

Four of the drivers are from Auckland and one from Northland.

Transport Agency toll manager Andy Thackwray says a small number of repeat toll evaders continue to flout the law and decline to use the range of payment options available.

He says the agency is preparing to get prosecutions underway in the next three to four months.

Mr Thackwray says this will send a message to other drivers who do not pay.

He says there is a 96% compliance rate on the toll road. The charges are used to repay the money borrowed to build the road.
