Charge laid over Wanaka hunting death

7:20 pm on 14 March 2012

A 24-year-old man has been charged over the death of his hunting companion, who was shot while hunting near Wanaka last December.

Police say Dougal Fyfe was one of three hunters who spotted a deer walking into the bush on a rural property in the Mangawera Valley.

They say a shot hit Mr Fyfe in the head while two of the group were pursuing the animal.

Police say they arrested the accused man after he declined to be interviewed.

He is charged with careless use of a firearm causing death, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, and will appear in Queenstown District Court next week.
