A man has been rescued following an avalanche at Temple Peak 50km north-west of Queenstown.

A group of heli-skiers and their guide were on the mountain when the incident happened just before 4pm on Sunday.

One man, aged in his 30s, was buried under two metres of snow for a number of minutes and had to be dug out by friends.

The man was evacuated from the mountain by air and transferred to a second helicopter before arriving at the Lakes District Hospital.

He was suffering suspected hypothermia and was said to be in a satisfactory condition.

Emergency services say it's not known at this time whether there is any danger of further avalanches in the Temple Peak area.
