Helicopter with NZ pilot crashes in Indonesia

Searchers in the Indonesian province of Papua have located the wreckage of a helicopter that crashed with three people on board, including a New Zealander.

The Queenstown-based company Kershaw Aviation says one of its pilots, Shri Rama Krishnan, 42, of Auckland, was on the helicopter when it went down on Saturday.

The company says a locator beacon had been activated, but the terrain had so far prevented searchers from getting to the crash site.

It says Mr Krishnan was flying a six-seater Squirrel on a routine food supply trip with two passengers when the helicopter went missing.

The company, which provides customers with helicopters and pilots, says two of its managers are on their way to the province to help authorities.

It is believed he hit bad weather shortly after take-off and attempted to turn back before the control tower lost contact at 8.30am.

The helicopter, chartered by the Indonesian arm of the American mining company Freeport-McMoRan, crashed in Mimika district, where the company operates its giant Grasberg gold and copper mine.
