Two teenage boys caught tagging by police in Wellington this year will be put to work with the city council's graffiti clean-up unit.

The teenagers, who are being dealt with by police youth aid, will have to paint over graffiti in various parts of the city.

The council says the boys will be supervised and given a lot of remedial work.

Wellington South community constable Dean Adams says cleaning up graffiti costs the council and private property owners hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
