Early childhood centres fear more funding cuts

A survey indicates early childhood centres are worried the Government will cut their funding in its next Budget.

The Early Childhood Council's survey of 167 early childhood centre owners and managers shows funding cuts are their biggest fear.

The council says the response to its survey was driven by the knowledge the Government wants to get more children into early childhood education without spending more money.

The council says its members also know that the Government's Early Childhood Taskforce recommended the Government reduce subsidies for children from richer families in order to increase subsidies for children from poor families.

It says that would drive some families out of early childhood education.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the Government has not yet made any decisions about funding.
