Slips cause problems on several North Island roads

The main road in to the Auckland settlement of Kawakawa Bay has been closed and some homes evacuated by a slip that's worsened in the heavy rain.

The slip on the Kawakawa to Clevedon Road began about a month ago and residents are being asked to take a longer, alternative route in and out of town.

The Manukau City Council says it has asked owners at the top of the slip to move out as a precaution, while geotechnical experts assess the area.

The council is working to clear the road but is closing it in the meantime because of the danger of further slips.

Caution advised on several North Island roads

The Transport Agency is advising caution on several North Island roads due to land slips.

In lower Waikato, the road is down to one lane for 100 metres on State Highway 4 in Mapiu at Aria.

Motorists are advised to take care.

Near Hamilton, there are two slips, about two kilometres apart, in the eastbound lane on State Highway 31 in Ngutunui at Hauturu, and there is no alternative sealed route.

And one lane on State Highway 37 at Waitomo is closed, due to a drop out.

In the Gisborne region, State Highway 35 from Tikitiki to Ruatoria is down to one lane, due to a slip 6km north of Ruatoria.
