Tribe points finger at council over car rally

2:52 pm on 28 March 2012

Central North Island iwi Ngati Rangi says the local council needs to improve its consultation after it failed to tell the tribe about a car rally in Tongariro National Park.

The Ohakune Giant 1000 planned for this weekend has been called off after pressure from the iwi and intervention by the mayor.

The tribe complained that hooning up a road on a sacred mountain is not on. It also criticised the Ruapehu District Council for allowing the Ohakune Mountain Road to be turned into a race track.

Ngati Rangi Trust chairperson Che Wilson says he would support a rally being held elsewhere.

Mr Wilson says the iwi supports ecoonmic opportunities in the area, and has discussed shifting the rally to another venue not on sacred sites within the national park.

Mr Wilson says he wants to talk with the organiser of the event.
