Dr Kaa died on Thursday after a short battle with cancer. He was 70.
Dr Kaa was of Ngati Porou and Ngati Kahungunu descent and founded Ririki, a national body devoted to stopping the maltreatment of Maori children.
He also worked in the Anglican Church for the past 50 years.
His body is being taken to the marae at Tikitiki Rangitukia, north of Gisborne, where he was born and raised.
Bishop Kito Pikaahu of Tai Tokerau, who is traveling with the body, says it is an honour to accompany him.
He says Dr Kaa will be buried on Tuesday and hundreds of people are expected to attend the service.
