10:05 pm on 1 April 2012

Two men have died in a microlight plane crash in Kaipara, north of Auckland.

The microlight crashed in a paddock on Fuller Road in South Head just before midday on Sunday.

The Rescue Coordination Centre says the crash was discovered by a farmer at about 2pm.

Spokesperson Sarah Brazil says there were reports from several other aircraft that mayday messages had been heard.

She says the men were flying from Ohakea to Dargaville.

A rescue helicopter from Whangarei with a medic on board was among the first on the scene, but found that both of the plane's occupants died in the crash.

St John's says the plane was still on fire when Search and Rescue arrived.

The Civil Aviation Authority will begin its investigation on Monday morning.
