NZ to give $500,000 to help Fiji flood victims

4:04 pm on 3 April 2012

The New Zealand Government is giving $500,000 to the agencies helping flood victims in Fiji.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says the money will be available immediately to groups including the Fiji Red Cross and the Government will consider further support for relief agencies if needed.

Mr McCully says the situation is severe, as Fiji is still recovering from floods in January and many agencies will not have fully replenished relief supplies.

Fiji flights resume

Air New Zealand is increasing its capacity in and out of Fiji as air services resume on Tuesday after four days of flooding.

At least five people are dead and thousands are sheltering in evacuation centres following days of torrential rain.

Air New Zealand has cancelled its return morning service from Auckland to Nadi and is replacing it with a larger plane with double the capacity. The flight will leave this afternoon and return on Tuesday evening.

The airline sent an empty jumbo jet to Nadi on Monday at the request of the Fijian military government and returned with 260 passengers.

Air Pacific has also resumed its services and will operate two flights out of Auckland to Nadi and one in the opposite direction on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a Northland woman stranded by the floods says it is a huge relief to be home.

Kate Malcolm and her partner flew to Fiji last week for her sister's wedding - which had to be cancelled.

She says the resort where they were staying was well-equipped but running out of water.
