Police say it could be two days before they are able to get crucial information from a man shot in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old remains in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital after surgery to remove a small calibre bullet from his lower abdomen.

Police believe the man was shot at his home on John Walker Drive before he walked to a nearby house and begged for help about 3.30am.

Inspector Gary Hill says police are aware that the man has gang connections and hope to speak to him soon.

Mr Hill says in the meantime, officers have been talking to occupants of houses in houses in the area, as well as associates of the victim and his family.
