Police in Wairarapa are investigating the death of a hunter in the Aorangi Forest Park, near Pirinoa.
The man was aged in his late 20s.
Detective Senior Sergeant Sean Hansen says the man's hunting companion phoned police shortly before 2pm on Saturday to report the death.
He says police are in the very early stages of the investigation.
Mr Hansen says he can not comment on the circumstances surrounding the death until police have interviewed witnesses from various hunting parties who were in the Aorangi Park area on Saturday.
Police say the scene will remain guarded overnight and the body of the man is likely to be removed on Sunday.
