Businesses flout holiday trading laws

6:13 am on 9 April 2012

More than 40 shops have been caught illegally trading over the Easter weekend.

The Department of Labour found 19 shops open for business on Easter Sunday and 22 on Good Friday.

The Shop Trading Hours Act, overhauled in 1990, specifies which shops must close on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and until 1pm on Anzac Day.

Exemptions apply for some businesses, such as cafes and convenience stores.

Retailers can be fined up to $1000 if they open illegally.
