Zero road toll over Easter weekend

9:43 am on 10 April 2012

This Easter has become the first holiday weekend since records began in which not a single person has been killed on the roads.

Police recorded hundreds of crashes since the holiday period began on Thursday but none have been fatal.

Acting national road policing manager Superintendent Rob Morgan says police are celebrating the fact that no families are grieving for someone who has died over the weekend.

"This isn't just figures, these are people's lives, so we celebrate that when we get a chance."

However, he says the success over Easter weekend is tempered by the deaths of nine people on the roads the previous weekend.

And, despite the zero Easter toll, the total number of deaths on the roads is higher than at the same time last year, with 86 fatalities compared to 73.

Last year there were five deaths at Easter, and 12 the year before. The lowest number of deaths before this year had been three

On two holiday weekends - Queen's Birthday in 2010 and another more than 50 years ago - a toll of one had been achieved, which until this year was the lowest.
