Norwegian released by Chilean authorities

1:00 pm on 10 April 2012

Norwegian adventurer Jarle Andhoy and his crew have been released by authorities in Chile.

Mr Andhoy and the crew, including one New Zealander, were arrested in Chile on 1 April.

They embarked on an unauthorised and illegal trip to Antarctica earlier this year.

Mr Andhoy originally accused New Zealand authorities of requesting the arrest but his spokesperson, Rune Olsgaard, says the crew were later told they had been detained for not having the correct documentation as the boat had been renamed.

Mr Olsgaard says it took several days to get all the papers signed because of the Easter holiday and the fact they had limited internet access.

He says now that everything has been sorted out, the vessel will sail for neighbouring Argentina where it will get repairs.
