Covered stadium on Cantebury Rugby Union's wishlist

The Canterbury Rugby Union says players and officials feel strongly that Christchurch's next rugby stadium should be covered.

Six options for a new stadium, to be built on the old Lancaster Park site, were been put forward at the Christchurch City Council's meeting on its draft annual plan this week.

Four are rectangular, like the Addington layout where a temporary stadium was built recently to take the place of the earthquake-damaged AMI Stadium, and two are oval.

Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Hamish Riach says it will make a submission supporting a covered stadium.

Mr Riach says the union also likes the idea of a rectangular stadium that has a capacity of between 30,000 and 35,000 people.

He says covered stadiums, including Otago Stadium in Dunedin which opened in time for the Rugby World Cup last year, create a special atmosphere and protect fans from the weather.

Public consultation on the draft annual plan opens on 20 April, with a final annual plan to be adopted by the council in June.
