New forensic technology in courtrooms

10:12 pm on 13 April 2012

Forensic scientists are rolling out new technology that allows jurors to pay a digital visit to the scene of a crime.

Environmental Science & Research is trialling 2D video walkthroughs that let jurors look around crime scenes and zoom in on exhibits for more detail and notes.

The technology is similar to the type used on real estate websites but in better quality.

ESR is also using lasers to scan crime scenes and create precise 3D models.

It can add extra details such as blood stains and bullet trajectories and create fly-throughs that allow jurors to see the scenes from several angles and distances.

The Crown research institute wants to introduce the 3D models into courtrooms in the next few months.
