A car-jacking in Auckland has ended after the offender drove past the scene of the crime while the victim was talking to police officers.
Police say a man opened the driver's door of the BMW on Richardson Road and threatened the driver with a knife.
The driver was not injured and got out of the car before ringing police.
Senior Sergeant Ross Endicott-Davies says while he was being interviewed, the carjacker drove past in the black BMW.
The officers followed and found the car had crashed through a bus shelter and into a construction site.
Mr Endicott-Davies says the driver ran away, but a police dog found him hiding under a house minutes later.
A 25-year-old man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Friday charged with aggravated robbery, escaping police custody and dangerous driving.
