No rent rise for council tenants

Christchurch City Council will vote on a recommendation next week that council housing rentals should not be increased this year.

The council is the second largest social housing landlord in the country, after Housing New Zealand.

Although almost 400 units were extensively damaged in the earthquakes, it says more than 2260 are currently occupied.

However, Mayor Bob Parker says many tenants are living in complexes which require repair.

He says the recommendation to defer a rent rise for a year recognises this concern.
