Builders take on more apprentices

8:10 am on 15 April 2012

A survey predicts the number of apprentices working in construction will increase by almost one quarter in the next year to meet increasing building activity.

The Building and Construction Training Industry Organisation says the number of employers planning to take on more apprentices has jumped from 10% in 2011 to more than 30% this year.

The organisation's chief executive, Ruma Karaitiana, says the number of apprentices being accepted is already rising.

"This time last year we were signing in the region of around 20 apprentices on a weekly basis. We're running at a hundred a week at the moment and have been for a couple of months now."

Mr Karaitiana says the growth will continue to be fuelled by the rebuilding of Christchurch and the desperate need for more housing in Auckland.
