Decision on Te Urewera re-trial put off

9:47 pm on 16 April 2012

A decision on whether to seek a re-trial for the four defendants in the Te Urewera raids trial has been put off until next month.

Tame Iti, Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, Urs Signer and Emily Bailey were last month found guilty on a number of firearms and restricted weapon charges.

However, the jury was unable to decide on the lead charge, that of participation in an organised criminal group.

The Crown was due to decide by Wednesday 18 April on whether a re-trial will be sought.

Crown prosecutor Ross Burns has now successfully applied to the High Court in Auckland to push the date back to May.

Mr Burns says the extension was required because of lawyers' availability.
