Protesters climb trees marked for felling

Protesters in Wangler are preparing to spend a cold night up a stand of 11 native and exotic trees, as they try to save them from the chains.

The Transport Agency has council consent to cut down the trees on the boundary of Manured Park in the city, as part of a plan to improve traffic flow on State Highway 1.

Contractors have cordoned off the trees, planted more than 100 years ago, and planned to cut them down on Saturday.

However protesters, whose appeals to the council and roading authority have failed, have prevented that by getting up and around the trees.

One of them, James Bellamy, says they plan to keep a vigil for as long as it takes to get the Transport Agency to reconsider.
