Dog owner backlash forces council fee rise rethink

Auckland Council has been forced to reconsider its plan to increase dog registration fees in the face of anger from dog owners.

The council wanted to increase the standard registration fee from $104 to $160, and to more than double the standard owner licence fee of $53 dollars.

It's now reconsidering the size of any increase after it received more than 4000 submissions opposing the proposed fees.

At a public forum on Monday several owners told council representatives exorbitant fees would hurt people who rely on dogs for companionship.

One owner, Moya Jocelyn, said a total bill of $800 for her three dogs would leave her broke.

Mayor Len Brown told the forum the council missed the mark badly.
