A dive team from Christchurch is on its way to help search for a man who is believed to have entered a lake near Greymouth while fleeing police.
The missing man was driving a car which police attempted to pull over at Cobden Tip Head, near Greymouth, at 12.30am on Saturday.
Police say that after a short pursuit, the car crashed and the driver left on foot. He was last seen in a lake.
The man indicated to the officers that he was stuck in mud and disappeared a short time later.
It was raining heavily at the time and ground searches failed to find any sign of him.
An initial search was suspended just after 5am. It resumed at first light.
