A man charged with the theft of a cash box from a bus in Lower Hutt has made a brief appearance in Court.

Herman Curry, 64, was found unconscious near his bus at the Waterloo interchange on Friday night and died shortly after. His cash box was missing.

A 20-year-old man is charged with stealing the cashbox and $153.50 in cash.

Judge Peter Butler granted interim name suppression to the accused man, who has been given bail on strict conditions, including that he not go within 100 metres of the Waterloo Bus Depot.

He will reappear in Court on 15 May.
