A man described as New Zealand's worst child pornographer has been jailed for five years.

Stephen Laing, 29, was arrested by the Customs Service and has admitted 24 counts of exporting child sexual abuse imagery.

Laing was caught with more than 6000 images depicting the sexual exploitation and degradation of children.

Judge Claire Ryan told the Waitakere District Court on Tuesday that, although it was not Laing that performed the indecent acts, it is people like him who create the demand for such images and people like him who are techno-savvy to satisfy the demand for others.

It is the fifth time Laing has been convicted of child pornography-related charges. His most recent offending was while he was on parole.

In 2008, he was also sentenced to five years' jail after pleading guilty to 56 charges, including possessing and distributing pictures of children and babies being abused.

Laing committed those offences while on bail and officials who tracked him down said he was the country's worst child pornographer.
