Two students have been injured in an explosion at the University of Canterbury.

A police spokesperson says the small explosion occurred in the Rutherford Building at 12.30pm on Wednesday.

The spokesperson says two people suffered minor injuries caused by flying glass and were being treated at the scene by a St John Ambulance crew.

The spokesperson says police and fire crews are also at the scene.

University's pro-vice chancellor of science Paul Fleming says the explosion happened when a student mixed a compound in a research laboratory and the glass container shattered.

He says the student suffered an injured hand, while another standing nearby suffered minor injuries to their neck.
