Auckland Council to start over on dog registration fee

Auckland Council has agreed to go back to the drawing board on its proposal to increase dog registration fees, which has been opposed by thousands of owners.

At a meeting on Thursday councillors voted to retain the current fee levels after some said the rises were being rushed through and were unfair on owners who spay or neuter their dogs.

Councillors were being asked to consider whether a standard dog licence fee should rise from $104 to $145, and an owner's licence for a dog which has not been de-sexed should rise from $53 to $90.

The majority said the proposed fee hike did not reward responsible dog owners and was too big a jump.
