Motorcycle New Zealand says a motorbike rider who was killed at a Feilding race meeting on Saturday took up the sport to celebrate a second chance at life after suffering a serious brain condition.

Mark Brehaut, 45, of Lower Hutt, died and another man, 53, was hospitalised with leg injuries after a crash at the Manfeild track.

Motorcycle NZ says it will offer counselling to other riders and track officials.

Media manager Phil Dark says an investigation will be held into conditions at the time and the safety of the bikes.

Mr Dark says Mr Brehaut created Team Brehaut Racing which supports cancer charities.

Both men belonged to the Victoria Motorcycle Club and vice president Andrew Presant says the club will honour the wishes of Mr Brehaut's family and continue the winter series meet on Sunday.
