Warrant issued for arrest of 'high-risk sex offender'

12:07 pm on 20 September 2008

Auckland police are looking for a man they describe as a "high-risk repeat sex offender" who has breached his prison release conditions.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Richard James Popata, 35.

Popata was released from jail at the end of August, a few days short of serving his full sentence.

In 2003, he was convicted for a range of offences including assaulting a child, injuring with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon.

He breached his conditions by leaving the address he is required to live at.

His last address was in Mt Eden but police say he is known in the Manukau, Papakura and Kaikohe areas.

Detective Inspector Bernie Hollewand says Popata has a history of indecent assault against both children and adults, and is considered dangerous to himself and to other people.

Police say anyone who knows where he is should call 111.
