Wild weather is causing problems on some South Island roads.

MetService says a nor'wester is due across eastern parts of New Zealand.

Gusts are expected to reach 130km an hour in exposed areas in Southland and Stewart Island.

Up to 200 millimetres of rain is expected in Fiordland and the Southern Alps south of Otira.

The New Zealand Transport agency says State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound, at the Lower Hollyford Turnoff will be closed all day due to a high avalanche hazard.

Extreme care is advised on State Highway 73, from Springfield to Arthurs Pass, especially for caravans, campervans and other tall vehicles.
