Netsafe says inciting suicide should be criminal offence

Internet watchdog group Netsafe says it supports a proposal which would make it illegal to incite someone to commit suicide.

Justice Minister Judith Collins has asked the Law Commission to fast-track work it is doing on recommendations for legislative changes to tackle cyber-bullying.

The changes being considered bring laws into the digital age by referring to computers and other electronic devices, as well as online behaviour, such as impersonating another person on the web.

The commission is also investigating making inciting suicide a criminal offence, regardless of whether a person actually commits suicide or attempts to.

Netsafe executive director Martin Cocker says most people assume that inciting suicide is a criminal offence, but that is not the case in New Zealand.
