A man convicted of stabbing a police officer last year has been sentenced to prison for six years.

Marcus Whakataka, 32, earlier pleaded guilty in the High Court in Hamilton to wounding with intent after a charge of attempted murder was withdrawn.

The officer, who was not wearing a protective vest, was stabbed four times while attending a domestic dispute in May last year.
