Maori perspectives sought on management of fresh water

The Ministry for the Environment is trying to get Maori perspectives on the way fresh water is managed.

Waatea News reports it is seeking proposals for two research projects looking at current approaches to water allocation, and ways tangata whenua science is included in environmental flow-setting decisions.

The ministry says it has consulted extensively with Maori in recent years and is now looking to get a nationwide perspective on the issues, as part of a joint work programme agreed by iwi leaders.

It says the research needs to be completed by April so it can feed into a wider reform of water management.
