Customs officials say an American man stopped at Auckland Airport with 1.3 kilograms of cocaine inside him could have died if the pellets had burst.

Customs officials say an American man stopped at Auckland Airport with 1.3 kilograms of cocaine inside him could have died if the pellets had burst.

Mark Henderson, who had arrived from Chile, admitted at the airport on Tuesday to attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country.

He appeared in the Auckland District Court on Thursday.

Customs official Mark Day says when officers searched the 42-year-old's bag they discovered a bag with powder and condoms inside, and Henderson admitted carrying 62 cocaine-filled pellets inside his body.
