Decision looms on Maori ward for Nelson council

7:21 pm on 18 May 2012

Residents of Nelson city will soon know whether a Maori electoral ward will be established in their local government region.

Creation of a Maori Ward would mean one seat at the council table would be mandated to represent Maori.

Ratepayers are able to have their say on whether they want the ward up until midday tomorrow.

Kevin Gardener - the voter who instigated the poll - says he is against special representation and that the Nelson council's plan to create a Maori ward is not popular with the locals.

Mr Gardener says the public feel they haven't been given all the information by the council.

So far, the binding poll has far drawn 15,309 votes and Mr Gardener says 47 percent of Nelson's electorate has voted on the issue..

The results are expected only a few hours after the polling closes on Saturday.
