MetService is advising people to watch out for rapidly rising streams and rivers, due to heavy rain forecast for Fiordland and the ranges of Westland overnight on Friday.
Northwest gales, severe in some cases, are also forecast for Westland and parts of Canterbury and Otago. The gales will gust up to 130km/h in some places.
Snow is forecast to fall at levels above 500 metres in some cases, affecting the Milford Road and Lindis Pass on Saturday.
