A man has appeared in the Whanganui District Court charged with the murder of veteran journalist Derek Round.

The 77-year-old was found dead in his Campbell Street home in Whanganui last Thursday morning.

Michael Werahiko, a 31-year-old listed on court documents as being unemployed and of no fixed abode, did not enter a plea when he appeared on Tuesday.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in June.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby says police still want to know more about the movements of Mr Round's blue Jaguar between last Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Missing clothing has yet to be located and police are also trying to establish whether more than one person was involved in the death.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Derek Round's family say they are grateful to police for their efforts and to everyone who has assisted with the investigation.

They say the are still in shock but with the help of family, friends and police they are continuing to deal with things one step at a time.

Meanwhile, Whanganui mayor Annette Main has paid tribute to Mr Round, saying in the short time he lived there he had explored opportunities that would benefit the North Island city in the future, including supporting the renowned Sarjeant Art Gallery.
