Inquires have begun into the death of a Hamilton woman who died following a difficult labour.

Casey Nathan, 20, gave birth at Huntly Birthcare on Monday night, but was soon taken to Waikato Hospital where she died several hours later.

It is understood the baby remains in a critical condition at Waikato Hospital on Wednesday.

Huntly Birthcare says staff are shocked at upset by the incident. General manager Ann Hanson says they have begun an investigation but she believes all staff involved acted in an exemplary manner.

A report by the Waikato District Heath Board is under way and the death has been referred to the Coroner.

Police say they went to the hospital following the death to act on behalf of the Coroner. Police will await the results of a post-mortem, to be conducted in Auckland, before deciding on any further action.
