Organisers behind the annual running of the sheep in Te Kuiti say the event was a success, despite the chaos caused when hundreds of animals took detours around the town.
A total of 1,477 Romney ewes were sent off on the 1km dash, but many didn't make it to the finishing line. Volunteers, including shepherds and their dogs, took about an hour to round up all the sheep.
Organiser John Fagan says the event attracted about 10,000 people this year, the most ever: that narrowed the street, he says, and spooked the sheep.
Mr Fagan says organisers will make sure the crowd is kept well back from the sheep run next year.
