A former RSA president has been fined $500 for wearing war medals he never earned.

Donald Moselen was president of the Otaki Returned and Services Association.

He pleaded guilty in April this year to wearing four medals - the New Zealand Operational Service Medal, the New Zealand General Service Medal, the Vietnam Medal and a replica Vietnam Medal.

In the Levin District Court on Tuesday, Moselen received the maximum penalty under the Military Decorations and Distinguished Badges Act 1918.

Judge Gerard Lynch told Moselen his actions were disrespectful to those who had served and died in the wars.

He said although he had been given the maximum penalty, the law should be amended so the penalty was harsher.

Moselen is to reappear in court in August this year to face a charge of dishonestly using an RSA cheque, which he has denied.
