Search for helicopter pilot suspended

Police and Navy divers have suspended their search for the pilot of a helicopter that crashed into a lake in North Canterbury.

Michael Mehrtens' helicopter crashed into Lake Sumner whil he was carrying out a weed spraying operation for the Department of Conservation on 21 May.

The 35-year-old's body has not been found.

Inspector Craig McKay says an underwater robot located the wreckage of the helicopter on Monday and a part of the landing gear was retrieved on Tuesday.

Mr McKay says police and Navy divers are suspending the recovery operation and will review

the search to decide whether to continue.
