Tauranga students who went missing during a school trip in the Kaimai Ranges on Tuesday are back at camp.

Their school principal says the ordeal has been a wake-up call but they want to finish the three day long camp.

The Tauranga Intermediate group of 11 and 12-year-olds entered the bush near Ngamuwahine Road, in the lower Kaimai Range, on Tuesday afternoon.

A search by police took place when they did not return, before the group was found later that night.

Principal Brian Diver says the students were happy to return and he will meet them later in the day to find out how they went missing.
