An aircraft maintenance company owned by Air New Zealand has been fined $56,200 following a fatal workplace accident.

Aviation engineer Miles Hunter, 51, died at Marlborough Airport in August last year.

Safe Air Ltd was also ordered to pay reparation of $22,500 in Blenheim District Court.

The Department of Labour told the court that two employees were servicing an engine that was mounted on a platform for testing at Woodbourne Airfield.

Mr Hunter went to check the right-hand side of the engine, which required him to walk past the air intake in front of the engine.

The department says he was not holding onto the handrail and was pulled into the engine.

It says a guard may have prevented the accident.
