A man is in a serious condition in hospital after a hit and run incident on a pedestrian crossing in Tauranga.
The police say the man, 65, had gone out for a walk. His concerned family contacted the police late on Friday night when he did not return. It was only then they learned of the accident, which happened around 9pm on Friday.
Sergeant Wayne Lambert says the victim's wife and daughter have been taken to his bedside at Waikato hospital where he is undergoing emergency heart surgery.
Mr Lambert says a man has been arrested and charged with failing to stop.
