ERO reports abuses at oldest registered school

A report into the oldest registered school in the country has found serious levels of theft, abuse and bullying in its boarding accommodation.

The Education Review Office says its information indicates the hostel at Wesley College in Pukekohe is an unsafe environment, particularly for junior boys.

The review office says two serious assaults took place in the first term of this year, one involving sexual harassment among a group of boys.

It found that a quarter of junior boarders had been bullied in that term alone.

The report recommends the government consider external support to bring the hostel up to minimum safety standards.

No-one from Wesley College was available for comment.
