E-Day collects at least 873 tonnes of waste

A nationwide drive to recycle electronic waste saw 873 tonnes of old computer parts and mobile phones collected on Saturday, known as e-Day.

e-Day organisers are confident the total could surpass the 1,000 tonne mark on Sunday, after Hamilton's contribution is included.

15,000 car loads of e-waste were received from Kaitaia to Invercargill, Wellingtonians led the way.

Wellingtonians gave more than 12,000 items, or 122 tonnes.

Christchurch and Tauranga both surpassed Auckland, which only received 54 tonnes for the entire region.

Among the haul were early Toshiba, Atari, Acorn and Sinclair models, which are now being auctioned online.

Organiser Laurence Zwimpfer says e-Day is important in disposing of equipment with lead and mercury, which can otherwise leech into landfills.

Waikato residents are expected to contribute a further 90 tonnes of e-waste on Sunday, through the Te Rapa Mainfreight Depot.
