4:13 pm on 4 June 2012

Met Service has issued a series of weather warnings, including heavy snow warnings for parts of the South Island.

Bitter southerlies are expected to bring heavy snow to North Canterbury and inland Marlborough from late Tuesday and snow showers, some down to sea level, in Otago and Southland.

Heavy rain warnings have been issued for eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne as well as Buller, northwest Nelson and Canterbury.

Much of the central North Island will also be affected by severe gale force winds, including Gisborne, northern Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Wanganui, Taihape, Wellington and Wairarapa.

Meanwhile, police in Waikato on Monday warned motorists to take extra care because of heavy fog in the region.
